In the Dominican Republic, 20 women, victims of a sexual exploitation network, have been rescued. This was reported by the Ministry of Public Safety on Tuesday. The women, including Dominicans, Haitians, and Colombians, were held under coercion with limited exits from a nightclub in the tourist province of Puerto Plata. They were forced to perform private dances for clients, with fees collected directly by the business administrators. During a raid conducted by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office against Illegal Trafficking in Migrants and Trafficking in Persons (PETT), five people were arrested. Authorities seized approximately $40,800, two vehicles, a shotgun, notebooks, and electronic equipment. The operation also involved the National Police's Central Directorate for Prevention and the Department for the Investigation of Trafficking in Persons, as well as the NGO Anti-Trafficking Bureau (ATB). On the same day, the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Public Safety inaugurated the new headquarters of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office against Illegal Trafficking in Migrants and Trafficking in Persons and the Unit for the Investigation of Illegal Trafficking in Migrants and Related Offenses. The country's Attorney General, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, stated: "Illegal migration, and more darkly, the commercialization of human beings, represents today one of the most important challenges to our security and defense." "These crimes have new threats, new manifestations. Today predators act behind a screen."
